First of all for all the mothers out there with teen, Megan Naramore Harris should be our hero right now. Megan Naramore Harris wrote an open letter to a Dillard’s sells person because she suggested that her teen daughter should wear the dress she had tried on with SPANX. People may wonder why women are starting to shop at smaller shops instead of the mall but this is one of the reasons why. The shopping experience in some malls are horrible. Here’s a note to retailers: Women don’t want to be followed when we are shopping and we don’t want to be told how we should we our clothes UNLESS we ask! Finally when it comes to a mother’s child don’t say a word any and all criticism should come directly from the MOM only..  We pray that the open letter written about this experience will open the eyes of these RETAIL giants and they will start to serve up better customer service. No one wants to spend their money where they are ridiculed.

Here’s our inspiration of the day: (Open Letter to Dillard’s Employee)

Dear sales lady at Dillard’s Towne East Mall,
This is my teenage daughter who wanted to try on dresses for an upcoming formal. I found this dress and asked her to try it on. She told me this was not her style, but tried it on for me. I told her how grown up it made her look and she smiled, and told me this made her look too old but still, she let me take a picture. Right after that, you entered and told my daughter she needed to wear SPANX if she wanted to wear this dress. I told my daughter to go change. I told you that she was just fine without SPANX. You continued to argue with me. We left soon after. I wish I had told you how many girls suffer from poor self image and telling them they need something to make them perfect can be very damaging. Girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are perfect because that is how God made them. If they feel good in a dress, that is all that should matter. My daughter is tall, she swims, runs, dances and does yoga. She’s fit. She’s beautiful. She did not need you telling her that she is not perfect. I hope this is shared and gets back to you so that you should not say something like that to a girl ever again. You never know what negative or positive thoughts they are thinking about themselves.
Sincerely,
Mother of a beautiful girl

News| Remembering the Women Killed In Kalamazoo shooting

image

Picking targets seemingly at random, a gunman went on a hours-long rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Saturday night, driving around the city and opening fire on unsuspecting victims — a woman outside an apartment complex, a father and son eyeing cars at an auto dealership, a group of women parked at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Six people died, and another two were seriously injured — including a 14-year-old girl who had been pronounced brain dead but squeezed her mother’s hand as doctors were preparing to harvest her organs, police said. Amid the carnage, her survival stood out as a miracle, authorities said.

The suspected killer, a 45-year-old Uber driver named Jason Brian Dalton, was in custody Sunday but had not been charged, police said.
Dalton has no record of criminal history, nor anything in his background “that would lead us to believe he was capable of this type of behavior,” Kalamazoo Police Chief Jeff Hadley said Sunday morning.

Dalton, who is expected to be charged Monday, apparently acted alone and there was no continuing threat to the community, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said. Uber’s chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, said Dalton had passed a background check to become a driver. The company was “horrified and heartbroken” and had offered to help investigators, he said.Local NBC affiliate WOOD reported that Dalton may have taken fares in between attacks.

The first shooting occurred around 6 p.m. local time at the Meadows Town Homes in the city’s northwest, where one woman was shot several times but survived, police said.

The next burst of gunfire happened more than three hours later, when police were called to a car dealership, where Rich Smith, 53, and his 17-year-old son, Tyler, were shot dead, authorities said. The father and child were looking at cars when they were gunned down, according to Robin Buchler, the superintendent of Mattwan High School, where Tyler was a student.

A few minutes later, the gunman approached a Chevrolet Cruze and a Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel. He briefly spoke to the people inside and then “unloaded his weapon into both cars,” Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said. All four people in the Cruze, including a 14-year-old girl, were hit, along with the sole occupant of the minivan. All but the girl died.

Michigan State Police identified the deceased female Cracker Barrel victims as Mary Lou Nye, 63, of Baroda, Michigan; Mary Jo Nye, 60, of Battle Creek, Michigan; Dorothy Brown, 74, of Battle Creek; and Barbara Hawthorne, 68, of Battle Creek.

News| 5-year-old saves blind grandmother from a house fire

image

A little girl was able to use a lesson she learned in school to help save herself and her blind grandmother when their home caught on fire. Cloe Woods, 5, was able to act quickly when a fire started on the stove early Wednesday morning. She immediately went to her grandmother’s room, and proceeded to get them both out of the home.

“She told my mom to hold her shoulder and that they had to get out of the house,” Cloe’s mom, Shone Arceneaux, told WWL-TV. Arceneaux was not present at the time of the fire because she was taking her other children to a nearby carpool stop.

Once Cloe, her grandmother and their dog were safely out of the home, the girl had the presence of mind to ask neighbors to call 911.

Cloe’s teacher said their class visited the Kenner Fire Department in October. This is where Cloe and the other kids in her class were told something very important: If there’s a fire, you need to get out of the house.

Cloe extended the lesson to her grandmother and dog.

The school has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family in the aftermath.

News| #1000BlackGirlBooks

A New Jersey fifth grader, Marley Dias was unsatisfied with the lack of diversity in the books she was being assigned to read, and she decided to call for a change, starting the #1000BlackGirlBooks movement in November. The project calls for 1,000 books with black girls as main characters — not background or minor characters — to be donated by Feb. 11, when Dias and her fellow student organizers will take the books to her mother’s hometown of St. Mary, Jamaica.

“I was sick of reading about white boys and dogs,” Dias explains in an interview with PhillyVoice.

“My parents have taught me the value of reading and self-love through books that have characters that look like me and talk like me,” she said in a statement. “I want to make sure other Black girls around the world can see and love themselves, too, through these books.”

#1000BlackGirlBooks has reportedly met half of its goal, and will continue collecting books thru Feb. 11.
