‘I was in my early teens when a group of girls from a neighbouring school started causing trouble at the school bus stop – trying to start fights with my friends and I. The rest of my friends decided it was time to move bus stops and avoid the commotion but at the time I felt it so important to stand my ground. I spoke to my mum and we both agreed that it wasn’t right to give in.
I still remember how petrified I was the next morning when I turned up alone at the bus stop. It was a real ‘I’m deciding who I am moment’ and something I was risking all alone. As with most dramas the girls did nothing and all was fine.
Over 15 years later that memory came up in conversation with mum and I. ‘I was nervous too hiding over on the far side of the road watching you’ she said. It was the most precious realisation. My mum was always there guiding me and looking after me, even when I thought I was most alone.
