I am sharing a funnier memory of just how crazy my mom can be. My mom, Maria raised three kids on her own, I am the youngest at twenty-seven years of age. This happened when I was around eight or nine years old.
My oldest brother liked to drop the F-bomb constantly, but at the time, he was fifteen years old. She kept telling him to watch his mouth, and his final response to her was, “F*ck the f*cking f*cker.” My moms response? Well, she reached out, grabbed him from underneath and proceeded toss him to the floor. This was over ten years ago, but he still backs up and cringes when she makes that gesture.
I should add that my brother now weighs over two hundred pounds and there is absolutely no way she would be able to do that again.
She would later tell me that she deliberately made us believe she was nuts so we would behave. My oldest brother is still convinced that she is.
I wanted to add that my mom has an incurable disease called Trigeminal Neuralgia. This disease has another name, the suicide disease, because people kill themselves to escape the pain it causes. There are no real treatments or medications for it. What doctors typically prescribe people diagnosed with this disease are pills intended to treat other conditions like Fibromyalgia, Bi-Polar, or MS such as Gabapentin or Carbamazepine/Tegretol. At one point, my mom was taking over twenty pills daily to manage her condition, to the point that the doctors were surprised she was even able to function.
She often described her pain as “A man with a blow torch” under her tongue and being electrocuted along her face. She went through two rounds of gamma radiation to the nerve to try and dull the pain, and two brain surgeries. One to insert teflon foil around the nerve to protect it and one to insert a balloon between the nerve and blood vessel beside it. One theory is that the lining of the nerve erodes due to a blood vessel growing around it. Since blood vessels pulse with our heartbeat, it is pulsating onto the nerve, sending pain signals with each pulse. This condition affects the whole side of the face, as the trigeminal nerve is the main nerve – all the nerves that feed into your teeth, eyes, head, tongue, skin, they all stem from that nerve. The trigeminal nerve is the largest of the cranial nerves.
There is no rhyme or reason as to why this condition occurs. For some people, they have it for a few months and it goes away forever. Others, they get this disease and it never leaves them. My mom went into remission for two years, and it returned and hasn’t left her since. As of two years ago, they have been trying to bring more awareness to this disease, so that studies can be done and maybe better treatments can be found.
