KYE is a textile design studio which specializes in sustainably produced woodblock printed textiles. It was started by Kat Rulach, a textile design graduate from the Glasgow School of Art. Kat has a passion for creating colorful textiles with minimal impact to the environment. The studio is based in Glasgow and produces bespoke fabric wall hangings for interiors.
The designs are created by Kat in her studio in Glasgow and each item is printed by hand using woodblocks. This traditional print process produces textiles with a special quality and each print has its own uniqueness. Woodblock printing is a technique that has been used on textiles for thousands of years and creates a beautiful print with a unique finish. KYE uses woodblock printing because of its many sustainable benefits and its handmade print quality. Woodblock printing also uses less water and ink when compared with silkscreen printing and also completely eliminates the process of washing screens where ink is let into our waterways.
The initial product line is a range of portable textile wall hangings which are affordable, endlessly customizable, environmentally friendly artworks for the home. The lead product is a decorative wall hanging specifically targeted for children’s rooms, which depicts the child’s name with a pattern in the theme and color of their choice. Other items Kat creates are the popular alphabet print and mini wall hangings with one initial. Kat hopes to expand her product range into more home textile products soon.
At the heart of everything designed for KYE is a passion for sustainable and ethically produced textiles. The materials are chosen with great care and the inks used are Soil Association Approved. The textiles used in KYE products are made from locally produced Scottish linen or GOTS certified Organic cotton. The core values for KYE are: innovation, design and sustainability, providing customers with a quality handmade product that will be treasured for many years to come.
