Growing a business is work- Hard work! Can you imagine not only growing and running a business but also taking care of a home and a family? This is my life. The life of a mother of 4 children, wife to an active duty Sailor, and a businesswoman. When I say I have had my set of challenges of being able to hold it all together, that would be an understatement. However, with the support of my family, and my faith, I seem to be getting by just fine!

Being a military family, I face the challenge of having to move frequently. As soon as I get settled in one place and make new friends, it is time to schedule the movers to come and pack us up to our next destination. Working seems almost impossible. Having small children, I did not want them to have to spend their entire day and evening in a day care, so I have been a stay at home mom for most of their childhood. As the needs of the family begin to increase: new car note, clothes and shoes for 4 kids, increased grocery bill, day care fees for three kids, I decided it was time for additional income. My husband was a bit skeptical of me working since I am available for everyone at any time, but he couldn’t deny the extra money would help.

I had no idea what I could possibly do to stay home with my children and earn money. Then I thought about the story in the Bible where the Profit Elijah asked the woman in debt to gather all her containers in her home and not a few…  I thought and though: what the woman needed to get her out of debt was already in her home. She just had use what she already had.  What is in my home I am overlooking? I am a creator, I love making and designing things with my hands. One day as I was writing a planning/preparation article for my blog, I got the idea to create a planner just for busy moms such as myself. From then on, I decided to create a line of stationery that includes everything from gift card holders, greeting cards and beautifully hand made planners.

There is so much to do when running a business and keeping the family intact. I must constantly pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance on a lot of things just to keep my head above water. There have been low periods as well as high periods but the one constant that never changes is God being there for me throughout it all. There have been many frustrating periods where I simply want to give up and settle for mediocrity. There have been times I want to refuse the route God is taking me. I fold my arms, poke out my lip and say, “If you won’t give me what I want right now I’m quitting!” Thankfully God has so much grace for me, I now realize that is not the way I want to react when things get tough.

One thing that the Holy Spirit has revealed to me during my most chaotic times is, my life is out of balance. Only until I am balanced will I decrease my anxiety and scatterbrain levels. For me, this means making sure I am able to keep my house neat and orderly, making time to take the kids out to play, sitting down with my kinder kid to help with homework and reading, going to my oldest child’s performances and concerts even though he’s in college now, not neglecting my husband, making sure we have a home cooked meal… things like that. Believe it or not, falling out of balance can happen before you can blink.  There have been times, my orders are coming in faster than expected, so I feel, “Maybe I should skip church and work… or “maybe the kids don’t need to go out and play.”

There will be times when I can’t do it all, but I know that I must make my best efforts not to give any one thing too much attention. My husband has been very helpful to do his part to keep the family in balance as well. I have had to retrain my mind to stop thinking I have to do everything myself. There is nothing wrong in asking for help, or even accepting help. One thing for sure is, the more I pray and have an intimate relationship with God, the less I am worried, anxious or fearful.

So, for everyone out there that has considered starting your own business, but you don’t know where to start, let me ask you, “What’s in your house?”
