What Happens When I Press Send? The Art of Communication
Things have truly changed since I was on my granny’s watch. If my granny had an issue with someone, she talked directly with the person she had an issue with. She didn’t believe in gossip or talking behind anyone’s back. My granny was really old school if she had an issue with you, she didn’t sugarcoat anything and you knew exactly what was on her mind. When my granny died, to my knowledge she didn’t have any enemies. When she had a problem with someone, she quickly resolved the misunderstanding with a quick telephone call or a face to face visit.
Nowadays most people of our society choose to resolve their issues either on some type of social platform, by text or email and because those methods are virtual only, we forget to monitor our tones. Oftentimes after receiving text or emails many relationships, friendships and sometimes family ties are divided based on people forgetting to think before they PRESS SEND.
As I write about this issue, I too am a culprit to this offense. Texts and emails are super convenient so who wouldn’t want to use it? Right? Right! I’ll admit sometimes I can be mean. I can be petty. I can be immature. If you can name it I can or have probably been all that you can think of. For me here’s where the problem lies with virtual communication… First off, my text and emails come directly to my phone, same as most people in the country.. It would be great if I had a designated time to sit down, read and process my texts and emails but I don’t. I try to respond to each text or email as they come in. Most times I’m already responding before I finish reading the full text or email. But what happens when I press SEND?
Once I press send to a text or press send to an email it’s almost like I’m finalizing everything. Sometimes depending on my mood, I will type or text then erase… I will type then delete. Type then backspace… backspace because now I have to consider what happens when I press send. Once I press send there’s no taking back my moment of anger.
Whether negative or positive once I press send all of the unedited thoughts of my emotions are final for someone else to review. Maybe I shouldn’t have texted every detail of what was on my mind. Maybe I should have watched my tone. But for now, I’m left to wonder what happens when I press send. When I press send will I lose friends or gain them? When I press send will hearts be broken or mended? When I press send will families be strengthen or be torn apart? What happens when I press send? Even as I type this post I’m wondering what happens when I press send…… – LK
