Susannah Mushatt Jones was born on July 6, 1899 and died on May 12, 2016. She was known as an American supercentenarian who died at the age of 116 years and 311 days old. She was at the time of death the world’s oldest living person and the last living American born in the 19th century. She received tributes from the United States House of Representatives and from the Alabama House of Representatives “for a remarkable lifetime of exceptional achievement lived during three centuries.”
According to NY Times, Ms. Jones was born on July 6, 1899, in Lowndes County, Alabama. She was the third of 11 children, and she graduated in 1922 from the Calhoun School, a boarding school her parents paid for by bartering vegetables raised on the family’s farm.
