The mother of a nine-year-old girl helped catch a suspected pedophile in Grapevine by pretending to be her daughter online.Police say they arrested 36-year-old Jonathan Ashley Butler Friday when he drove from Grapevine to Justin to have sex with the girl.
“He had already made arrangements that [was] where they were going to meet,” said Grapevine police Lt. Barry Bowling on Monday. “That’s when he was intercepted.”Jonathan Butler is the father of one of the girl’s friends she visits at Hilltop apartments in Grapevine. The mother of the would-be victim told WFAA she saw his suspicious texts on her daughter’s phone, then saw his photo pop up in a separate account.
“The mother, doing what any good parent would do, occasionally runs through her phone and checks up on her, then noticed some strange messages,” Lt. Bowling said.
The mother told WFAA she pretended to be her daughter in a text conversation with Butler. She said he asked for sex within minutes. A police officer continued the text conversation and set up a sting to arrest Butler.
“We’re doing forensics on his cellphone and computers to determine if there are other victims that he already had relationships with,” Bowling said.Jonathan Butler is jailed on a $50,000 bond for online solicitation of a minor, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
