If you ever want to make an impression on close friends and relatives this is how to do it. Nothing says best cook like a new appetizer-fried green tomatoes. You should be able to purchase green tomatoes at your local farmer’s market where they sell nothing but the best fruits and veggies.
Here’s what you will need to cook these golden goodies: FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
2 large green tomatoes
1/2 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 quart Crisco vegetable oil for frying
Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends.
Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix flour, and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Then return to the flour mixture. Some people use the flour coat first then the milk and egg mixture then coat with cornmeal but I just use flour unless serving with fried fish.
In a large skillet, pour Crisco vegetable oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and heat over a medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels.
Sidenote: This is not the type of food that you start to fry and walk away from because you only need to fry the tomatoes until they are crisp golden brown. Also this is more of a appetizer and not really a side.
