As with anything, there are always opposing views on the benefits of eating breakfast however, from my standpoint I am a big believer that breakfast is essential for an overall healthy diet.

When looking at the word breakfast, many of us do not realize that breakfast is a break from the fast your body goes through each night you go to sleep. Your body stays in a fasting state the longer you weight to eat a meal.

Why is it important to understand this? Well there are two reasons in particular that support the idea of eating breakfast.

1. Food is fuel and your brain, as well as your body, needs fuel to function properly. Fuel, or glucose, is needed for walking, talking and performing all other activities. It is the reason we make sure our children eat a good breakfast before a big test. Skipping breakfast forces our bodies to work at a deficit and our bodies have to work harder to get the necessary energy to start the day.

2. Skipping breakfast can put your metabolism into famine mode. Three to four hours after a meal, your metabolism starts to shut down and store food. This is great if you are in a situation where you are stranded on a deserted island with no food but not a good idea if you have food in your pantry. When your metabolism shuts down, your body starts packing on the pounds to protect you from starvation. Not what you want if you are looking to lose weight.

Now if we are on the same page with eating breakfast, it is important to note that what you eat is just as significant as if you eat.

A stack of pancakes with sausage, eggs and a piece of toast is not the way you want to start off the morning. A meal like this packs over 1300 calories and would equal disaster for any diet. It is also not a good idea to eat sugary cereals and pastries. So what should you eat for breakfast?

Well, you want to look for grade A, top of the line fuel. This is your whole grains, fruits, yogurts, egg whites, vegetables, etc. A good example would be an egg white omelet with turkey sausage, mushrooms, spinach and some feta cheese. Sound good… Well if you are short on time, another option could be almond milk with a whole grain cereal and fresh fruit. Cascadian Farms and Kashi have a few cereal options that I enjoy. Or go with tried and true Cheerios. I start every morning with my Beach Body Vegan Strawberry shake.
