Its not too late to start eating healthy

I remember a conversation I had with a family member over my food choices. They asked me, “Why limit what you eat when we are all going to die anyway? We might as well enjoy it.” Well, he could not have said it better. We are all going to die. However, what he did not understand is that my expectation is not to live forever. My expectation is to live well and to live limitless.
There was a time when I did not view life in these terms. I ate what tasted good to me and I did not look beyond the moment. Then it hit me. The weight slowly crept up on me till the point that I did not recognize myself in the mirror. I remember going for clothes shopping and leaving the store crying. It was disheartening not to be able to fit in the clothes I tried on. This was not something I was familiar with. So I made the decision to go on a “diet”. At the time, I didn’t really care about the health aspect; I just wanted to lose weight. But in the process of trying to lose weight I started reading and learning. I started to realize that there was something more to this than being skinny. It was more about being healthy. I started to notice the statistics and realized I didn’t want any part of the growing numbers. My focus shifted from just losing weight to living healthy. I slowly started to cut out crap in my diet and add in the good stuff. That was about 13 years ago and I am still reading and learning now.
You see, my goal is to not just be around (viewing life from the sidelines) 10, 20, 30 years from now. It is about having a good quality of life and being active, strong, energized and involved in the lives of those around me. So yes, I will die one day but up until that time, I will be an active participant in my life. This leads me to ask you, how do you want to live?
